A dramatic scene unfolded near Donner Summit in Placer County on Tuesday as a big rig carrying malt caught fire, slowing traffic and drawing emergency responders to the area. The incident, which occurred on westbound Interstate 80, created significant delays for commuters and travelers during peak hours.
The fire broke out in the trailer of the big rig, which was transporting a load of malt, a key ingredient in brewing beer. Flames quickly engulfed the trailer, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air. Drivers in the area reported seeing the fire from miles away, with some describing it as "intense" and "alarming."
Emergency crews, including firefighters from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), rushed to the scene to contain the blaze. Despite the dramatic visuals, no injuries were reported, and the driver of the big rig managed to escape unharmed.
The fire caused significant delays on westbound I-80, one of the main routes connecting Northern California to Nevada. Traffic was backed up for miles as crews worked to extinguish the flames and clear the roadway. Caltrans advised drivers to seek alternate routes and expect delays throughout the afternoon.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, preliminary reports suggest that the load of malt may have played a role. Malt is highly flammable, and under certain conditions, it can ignite spontaneously. Investigators are also looking into whether mechanical issues with the big rig could have contributed to the incident.
As crews work to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow, questions remain about how similar incidents can be prevented in the future. The incident highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and proper handling of flammable materials during transport.
For now, travelers are encouraged to stay updated on road conditions and plan accordingly to avoid delays.
