A Newport News man is facing legal consequences after an altercation turned violent, involving gunfire in a residential neighborhood. The incident, which shocked local residents, unfolded late Wednesday evening.
According to Newport News Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of 33rd Street around 10:30 p.m. Witnesses reported hearing loud arguing followed by multiple gunshots.
Rather than making an immediate arrest, officers issued Thompson a summons to appear in court—a decision that has some residents questioning the department's response to gun violence.
Neighbors expressed mixed reactions, with some calling it "another day in Newport News" while others voiced concerns about escalating violence in the area. "Hearing gunshots isn't unusual anymore," said one resident who asked to remain anonymous. "But seeing someone walk away after shooting in public? That's new."
Thompson is scheduled to appear in Newport News General District Court in the coming weeks. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, he could face up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
