(FOX40.COM)-- A male in a wheelchair was fatally struck by an automobile in Modesto early Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to CHP, just before 6 a.m., emergency personnel reacted to a call of a vehicle striking a pedestrian near Santa Cruz Avenue and Mono Drive.
Life-saving steps were performed on the man but he died from his injuries. The chauffeur of the lorry, a Chevrolet SUV, stayed at the scene.
An examination by CHP identified the SUV headed south on Santa Cruz was traveling at an unknown speed and the pedestrian got in the street's crossway with Mono Drive.
CHP said the chauffeur was "unable to avoid the crash" which it is undetermined if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
