PITTSBURGH — In a thrilling display of power and skill, Andrew McCutchen launched a three-run home run, marking the 10th time he has reached the 20-homer milestone in his illustrious career. This impressive feat helped the Pittsburgh Pirates secure a hard-fought 6-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.
The 37-year-old designated hitter turned on a fastball from Miami's Adam Oller, sending the ball soaring into the bleachers in left field. This pivotal moment came with two runners on base and two outs in the fifth inning, extending Pittsburgh's lead to five runs.
Alongside McCutchen, both Isaiah Kiner-Falefa and Bryan Reynolds contributed significantly with two hits each. The Pirates' pitching staff was also commendable, with Joey Wentz earning the win after allowing just one run in 2.2 innings. Aroldis Chapman faced a tense ninth inning but managed to secure his eighth save, capping off a night where the Pirates utilized six relievers behind opener Carmen Mlodzinski.
For the Marlins, Jhonny Pereda stood out with three hits, while Kyle Stowers added two doubles. However, after a surprising wild-card berth last season, Miami is now on track for their first 100-loss season since 2019. The 29-year-old Oller, one of a record 69 players the Marlins have used this season, struggled, giving up multiple runs early in the game.
As McCutchen continues to chase history, he is not ready to hang up his cleats just yet. He has expressed his desire to keep playing, aiming for a strong finish to the season and showcasing his capabilities for next year.
The series concludes with a matinee on Wednesday, featuring Bailey Falter (7-7, 4.45 ERA) for the Pirates. The Marlins have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
