Mayor John Whitmire calls for an independent review into thousands of suspended HPD cases


HOUSTON (BNN)-- Houston cops chief Troy Finner will hold an interview Wednesday morning to address the back log of a quarter of a million cases that were suspended due to an internal HPD code that cited a "absence of workers."

Chief Finner has given that called the circumstance "inappropriate" and said HPD is currently arranging through 264,000 cases. More than 4,000 of those were adult sexual attack cases.

The chief is expected to discuss the internal review process and how the department plans on getting in touch with victims.

After news of the suspensions broke, the chief selected 100 unique assignment officers to check out the homes of those who filed adult sex crime problems. 32 investigators and managers have actually also been entrusted with reaching out by phone or email to assist close the spaces and bring closure to affected victims.

On Wednesday, Mayor John Whitmire announced he's calling for an independent review to make sure openness and maintain public trust.

" I trust and believe Police Chief Troy Finner is doing the very best he can to handle the internal examination, get to the bottom of it, and hold people accountable. The independent panel will be people I also trust to examine and verify the result and assistance bring closure to the victims."

The mayor stated in the coming days, the names of those who will serve on the independent review panel will be released. In a post on X formerly known as twitter, Chief Finner stated he invites the independent review.

" The mayor and I have spoken practically everyday about this matter, and I appreciate his ongoing assistance of HPD and my administration," the chief composed in his X post.
