Miami became the epicenter of activism this week as hundreds gathered to rally in support of a Columbia University student and activist who is facing deportation. The protest, which took place in the heart of downtown Miami, drew a diverse crowd of students, immigrant rights advocates, and community leaders, all united in their call for justice.
The focal point of the rally is Carlos Rojas, a Colombian-born student and prominent activist at Columbia University. Rojas, who has been a vocal advocate for immigrant rights and social justice, recently received a deportation order from U.S. immigration authorities. Supporters argue that his deportation would be a blow to the broader movement for immigrant rights and academic freedom.
Protesters chanted slogans like "Education, Not Deportation!" and "Let Carlos Stay!" as they marched through the streets, holding signs and waving flags. The rally also featured speeches from local activists and community organizers who emphasized the importance of standing up against what they called an unjust immigration system.
Several prominent figures joined the protest to show their solidarity with Rojas. Among them was Maria Gonzalez, a Miami-based immigration attorney, who addressed the crowd:
"Carlos represents the best of what this country stands for—hard work, resilience, and a commitment to justice. Deporting him would not only be a personal tragedy but a moral failure for our nation."
Another speaker, Javier Morales, a local labor organizer, highlighted the broader implications of Rojas' case:
"This isn’t just about Carlos. It’s about every immigrant who has ever been told they don’t belong here. It’s about every student who has ever been silenced. We cannot let this stand."
Rojas’ legal team has filed an appeal to halt the deportation order, but the process could take months. In the meantime, supporters are organizing additional rallies and crowdfunding campaigns to cover legal expenses. The case has also garnered attention on social media, with hashtags like #FreeCarlos and #LetCarlosStay trending nationwide.
As the fight continues, one thing is clear: the Miami protest is just the beginning. Activists are determined to keep the pressure on until Rojas’ case is resolved—and until systemic changes are made to protect others in similar situations.
