A young woman searching for a good friend's home was shot and eliminated in upstate New York after she and her good friends rejected the incorrect driveway, cops said Monday.

Kaylin Gillis, 20, was riding in an automobile in Washington County on Saturday night with 3 other individuals, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy stated.

The group declined a driveway on Patterson Hill Road in Hebron, but quickly realized their mistake and attempted to leave, according to Murphy.

" It's a really rural area, it's dirt roads, there's not a lot of cellular service or any type of internet," the sheriff stated.

As they were leaving, the house owner stepped outside onto his porch and fired two bullets at the lorry, authorities said. One of those bullets struck Gillis.

Officers went to the Hebron house and experienced its owner, Kevin Monahan.

Monahan, 65, "was not cooperative. He would not come out and speak with patrols," Murphy said. "We had a little a scenario there.".

After a standoff lasting more than an hour, Monahan surrendered. He was charged with second-degree murder.Monahan has not stated anything of substance to detectives, Murphy stated Monday. He remains behind bars in the Warren County prison.

Gillis was killed 2 days after Ralph Yarl, 16, was shot and wounded after knocking on the wrong door in Kansas City, Missouri. The suspect in the teenager's case was at first released but later on charged with 2 felonies.

Missouri is among 30 states with so-called "stand your ground" laws that allow homeowner to shoot very first and ask questions later. New York is not one of those states; under New York law, house owners have a responsibility to pull away.
