In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Lafayette community is coming together in solidarity after two distressing incidents involving children and vehicles. Within a mere 24 hours, two kids were struck by cars off Baseline Road, prompting urgent calls for enhanced safety measures in the area.
The first accident occurred just after 4 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Baseline Road and King Street, followed by another incident at Roser Drive shortly after 8 a.m. the following day. These two intersections are located less than a quarter of a mile apart, making the proximity of these tragedies all the more alarming.
Residents are rallying to bolster safety measures in the aftermath of these incidents. Local parent Jennie Fletemeyer expressed her concerns, emphasizing the need for better awareness among drivers. “It hits close to home,” she said. “I want to help the drivers know about this crosswalk so that kids and our community can cross safely and confidently.”
“They just pick up a flag and walk across when it’s safe and put it down on the other side,” Fletemeyer explained, demonstrating a creative approach to enhancing visibility and safety.
The local community has contributed various ideas to improve safety, including suggestions from young residents like Willow Fletemeyer. Willow mentioned, “We put up some slow-down signs in the road and signs on these buckets that say ‘take it to make it.’”
Despite her young age, Willow emphasizes the importance of the initiative. “It’s not supposed to be self-gratifying. It’s for the people who got hurt, and I want to remember that as well,” she stated, highlighting the spirit of unity driving this movement.
The overarching message from community leaders like Jennie Fletemeyer is clear: “We are so much better together. Together, we can accomplish so much more. It takes a village to raise these kids, and we look out for each other.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of community—caring for one another and ensuring the safety of all its members.
The Lafayette community is not just mourning but also mobilizing for change. As they band together, they embody the belief that collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful improvements in safety and a stronger, more supportive environment for their children.
