In a stunning display of sports memorabilia mania, the ball from Shohei Ohtani's historic 50th home run has been auctioned off for an eye-popping $4.4 million. This remarkable sale not only sets a new benchmark for baseballs but also marks the highest price ever paid for any ball in sports history, according to the auctioneers.
Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers' star, made baseball history by becoming the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. He achieved this milestone on September 19, during an electrifying game against the Miami Marlins, where he hit two of his three home runs in that match.
Ken Goldin, founder and CEO of Goldin Auctions, expressed his excitement, stating, “We received bids from around the world, showcasing the significance of this iconic collectible and Ohtani’s impact on sports. I’m thrilled for the winning bidder.” The auction kicked off on September 27 with a starting bid of $500,000 and closed just after midnight on Wednesday.
However, this auction has not been without its complications. A legal battle is currently unfolding over the rightful ownership of the ball. Christian Zacek claims he secured the ball after it landed in the left-field stands, but two other individuals, Max Matus and Joseph Davidov, are also laying claim through separate lawsuits.
Despite the ongoing litigation, all parties involved have agreed that the auction should proceed.
As Ohtani and the Dodgers prepare for Game 1 of the World Series scheduled for Friday night, fans and collectors alike are left wondering what the future holds for this extraordinary athlete and his record-breaking achievements.
