Sacramento County rolls out new tiny homes for the unhoused

(FOX40.COM)-- In an effort to offer standard basics for the regional homeless community, Sacramento County released a brand-new small home space called Safe Stay near the corner of Florin Road and Power Inn Roadway.

" The top goal is constantly helping them to secure permanent real estate, however we understand that for some people that can take quite a bit of time, specifically in the (current) market," stated Emily Halcon with the Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services.

The community rests on nearly three acres and includes 125 beds, 24-hour security, air-conditioned rooms, different trailers for bathrooms, a trailer for showers, and a trailer for laundry. Toiletries are attended to visitors and there's also workplace for work and healthcare.

" This truly represents a change in the way that we're attempting to provide services," Halcon stated. "First, we're attempting to co-locate services like this in the community where individuals feel a part of the home. We're going to serve individuals here in South Sacramento… … they're in South Sacramento for a reason so sheltering them in their community will go a long method."

Neighborhood members in attendance at Safe Stay's opening supported the effort.

" I know some areas are upset about them being here but I'm happy about them being here," stated one Sacramento community member. "I think it's a truly great chance."

Each guest's average stay is expected to be up to 90 days, according to the Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services. Needed criteria to remain at the Safe Stay consist of a recommendation from a community outreach member. Visitors must also keep etiquette, a felony-free criminal record, and be at least 18 years of age.
