(FOX40.COM) - - Sacramento will soon see a new mayor for the first time in eight years after Darrell Steinberg, who has been serving because 2016, opted not to run for a 3rd term.

If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote in the primary, then the top two candidates will carry on to the basic election in November. The winner of that election will be sworn in as mayor in December.

Sacramento has what is called a weak-mayor system, where the city supervisor is the executive officer of the city, able to propose budget plans along with hire and fire department heads.
In Steinberg's very first term, he backed a step to offer the city's mayor more power, but citizens declined the proposition.
