San Diego Gets a Major Transportation Boost: $82.5 Million for Highway Improvements!

In a significant win for the San Diego region, the California Transportation Commission announced on Monday that the city will receive a remarkable $82.5 million to fund essential highway improvement projects. This funding is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing critical transportation infrastructure across the state.

Recent Funding Highlights

Just last week, on August 16, the commission allocated over $1.8 billion for various infrastructure enhancements throughout California. These funds come from key sources, including nearly $458 million from Senate Bill 1, known as the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, and more than $1 billion from the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Key Projects Funded in San Diego

San Diego will benefit from a total of seven well-chosen projects funded by this latest round of allocations, including:

• $36.1 million to Caltrans and SANDAG for improvements on SR-11 at the Otay Mesa East Land Port of Entry. This project involves constructing drainage facilities, performing earthwork and paving, and setting up temporary federal and state facilities.
• $2.5 million to Caltrans for I-805 near H Street in Chula Vista. This funding will supplement a culvert project that requires tunneling due to a discovered utility line and will also assist with project shoring.
• $2.1 million to rehabilitate pavement and drainage systems on SR-78, from Haverford Road to east of Magnolia Avenue in Ramona. This project will also include replacing roadside sign panels and upgrading facilities to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
• $10.1 million to Caltrans for rehabilitating four bridges on I-805 from Telegraph Canyon Road to Federal Boulevard, as well as on I-5 at the 30th Street Pedestrian Overcrossing, enhancing both safety and structural integrity.
• $8.2 million for SR-79 from west of SR-78 to the Riverside County line, aimed at rehabilitating culverts, replacing sign panels, and improving bicycle and pedestrian access.
• $800,000 to Caltrans and SANDAG for bridge deck rehabilitation projects on I-8 at the El Cajon Boulevard and Marshall Avenue overcrossings.
• $22.6 million to Caltrans on State Route 15 from Ocean View Boulevard to State Route 52, focusing on culvert rehabilitation, sign panel replacement, and updating facilities to ADA standards.
