In a dramatic turn of events, several key players in Mark Robinson's campaign for governor of North Carolina have resigned, only days after a CNN investigation exposed troubling comments he made on a pornographic website over a decade ago. This unexpected shake-up raises questions about the future of Robinson's candidacy and the implications for the Republican Party in North Carolina.
On Sunday evening, the campaign confirmed the departures of several high-ranking officials:
Pogorzelski confirmed to CNN, “The reports are true that I, along with others from the campaign, have left of our own accord.” This mass exodus appears to be a direct reaction to the fallout from Robinson's past comments.
The CNN report revealed that Robinson, the lieutenant governor and Republican nominee, had made highly inappropriate remarks on a pornographic message board known as Nude Africa. Some of these comments included:
Robinson's past is not without controversy, but these newly surfaced comments have raised the stakes significantly.
In an interview with CNN, Robinson dismissed the allegations, stating, “These are not our words. And this is not anything that is characteristic of me.” When presented with evidence linking him to the username on the website, he characterized the claims as “salacious tabloid lies.”
Despite the backlash, the North Carolina Republican Party has publicly supported Robinson, asserting that “the Left needs this election to be a personality contest, not a policy contest.” However, internal pressure mounts as some party members urge him to step down, especially given the passing of the candidate withdrawal deadline.
As Robinson insists on continuing his campaign, stating confidence in the Republican support in North Carolina, the political landscape remains uncertain. His absence at a recent rally hosted by former President Donald Trump further complicates his standing.
