In a disturbing event that has left many in the Akron community shaken, two police officers were involved in a serious incident at Firestone Community Learning Center on Wednesday morning. The situation escalated when officers were forced to use physical force on a minor student, ultimately leading to the student being escorted away in handcuffs. Here’s what we know so far.
According to Akron school board member Barbara Sykes, the male student had been passing through the school's metal detectors when he triggered repeated alarms after emptying his pockets. The exact circumstances that led to the use of force remain unclear, and several students witnessed the alarming scene unfold.
Both Mayor Shammas Malik and Sykes confirmed the incident, emphasizing its seriousness and the need for transparency. Malik, who stated he had viewed the security footage, remarked, “It’s a serious incident, and we want to take it seriously and share all the information we can with the community.”
In response to the incident, the school district has deployed counselors to help students process the event and its implications.
This incident is not occurring in a vacuum; the Akron Police Department has faced heightened scrutiny regarding its use of force, particularly following the controversial shooting of Jayland Walker in 2022. Use-of-force incidents trigger internal investigations to evaluate whether the actions taken were appropriate for the circumstances.
The officers involved in this incident are part of a program where sworn law enforcement officers serve as resource officers in Akron Public Schools. They are intended to provide security but are not directly employed by the school district.
Angela Carter, chief of staff for Akron Public Schools, acknowledged the incident but refrained from commenting further until all details are confirmed. “I need to get all the information and details before I start sharing information,” she said.
A press conference is scheduled for Monday morning, where Mayor Malik will provide more insights and discuss the next steps in reviewing the city's use-of-force policy. The community awaits answers and accountability as discussions continue about the role of police in schools and their methods of intervention.
