A controversial class action lawsuit has been filed against Gateway Church, one of the largest megachurches in the United States, alleging financial fraud in relation to congregants’ tithes. The lawsuit claims that church leaders misled their members by promising that a portion of their contributions would be allocated to foreign missionary work.
According to the lawsuit, which was initiated on October 4, church leaders, including former senior pastor Robert Morris, assured congregation members that 15% of all tithes would be directed to global missions and Jewish ministry partners. Despite these promises, the plaintiffs claim that the church failed to honor this commitment, leaving them in the dark about the fate of their donations, potentially amounting to over $15 million annually.
A critical component of the lawsuit involves the findings of a certified public accountant who was hired by the church in 2011 to maintain financial oversight. This accountant discovered significant discrepancies between the amounts reported as being sent overseas and the actual funds leaving the church's accounts. When he raised these concerns, he was allegedly met with hostility from church leadership.
Micah Dortch, the attorney representing the congregants, stated that the lawsuit was a last resort after repeated attempts to seek answers from the church were met with resistance. He emphasized that the church's previous assurances about refunds if members were dissatisfied could constitute a binding contract under Texas law.
The lawsuit is not only a reflection of financial grievances but also highlights broader questions about accountability within religious organizations. As one of the largest churches in the U.S., with over 100,000 members, the potential class action could involve tens of thousands of individuals and seek damages exceeding $5 million.
The lawsuit arrives during a tumultuous period for Gateway Church, following Robert Morris's resignation amid allegations of past sexual abuse. This situation has further fueled the fire of discontent among congregants, who now demand accountability and transparency regarding their financial contributions.
As this intriguing case unfolds, the implications for Gateway Church and the broader religious community are significant. Stay tuned for updates as more information comes to light.
