In a candid interview, a hotel manager in Sacramento has revealed the financial toll a nearby homeless encampment is having on their business. The manager, who chose to remain anonymous, claims the encampment has led to a significant drop in bookings and revenue, with losses estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars.
The hotel, located in a busy urban area, has seen a sharp decline in guests since the encampment began growing last year. The manager cites safety concerns, litter, and noise as the primary reasons potential customers are choosing to stay elsewhere. "It's been devastating," the manager said. "We've had to lay off staff and cut back on services just to keep the doors open."
According to the manager, the encampment has also led to increased security costs. "We’ve had to hire additional security personnel to ensure the safety of our guests and staff. This is an expense we simply didn’t budget for," they added.
This isn’t just a problem for the hotel. Local businesses in the area are also feeling the pinch. Small shops and restaurants have reported a drop in foot traffic, with many customers citing the encampment as a deterrent. "It’s a ripple effect," said one local shop owner. "When one business suffers, we all do."
City officials have acknowledged the issue but say they are struggling to find a balance between addressing homelessness and supporting local businesses. "We’re working on solutions, but it’s a complex problem that won’t be solved overnight," a city spokesperson said.
While the hotel manager appreciates the city’s efforts, they believe more immediate action is needed. "We can’t afford to wait for long-term solutions. We need help now," they said.
