As Las Vegas police officer Ivan Gutierrez sped to a house where a child had actually been found face down at the pool, he knew time was not on his side.
" I require to get there right now," Gutierrez said in a Metropolitan Police Department video published recently about the 2022 incident.
Body used electronic camera video footage recorded the painful minutes as the kid lay motionless on the flooring and Gutierrez carried out CPR as family members sobbed out in distress close by.
The kid started to spit out water and program indications of life. Paramedics reacted and the child made a complete healing.
" You simply have to continuously watch on your kids," Gutierrez said.
In the last two years, the Clark County coroner's office said there have been 16 child drowning deaths: two this year, and 14 in 2022.
Brianna Barber, executive director of the Durango Hills YMCA, said drowning represents one of the three most typical causes of death for children, but that these deaths are avoidable.
Some misconceptions about child drownings are that they typically take place under some form of supervision and generally occur in less than 4 feet of water, Barber said.
She suggested the list below water safety pointers for people to practice at pool parties:.
- - Adults monitoring kids need to remain off their devices.
- - Send your child to another individual's swimming pool with a personal flotation gadget.
- - A grownup must constantly be on the pool deck.
- - Have kids take water and sunblock breaks.
Barber also advised examining fundamental pool guidelines whenever kids enter into the water. These include requesting for approval prior to entering into the pool, not running around the pool, not playing breath-holding video games and not pressing people in the water or holding people under water.
Fences around yard pools must be locked at all times, and grownups hosting children in their pool need to know the swimming capability of each kid and have flotation gadgets on hand for everyone to use.
