DES MOINES, Iowa- After starting the season 12 days late, Brenton Skating Plaza likewise had to close down for 25 days in overall since of the weather.
Because the record breaking temperatures are more regular,
Des Moines Parks and Recreation states that this year is more tough than previous years. Teams have to work late nights and mornings to treat the ice.
Despite this, Parks and Rec says they're still attempting to make the most out of the winter skating season.
"It's an excellent sensation understanding that we have this service to provide the community here in Downtown
Des Moines. We try to make as many collaborations as we can and programming for everyone," said Anthony Leo, the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.
Much of their scheduled programs were cancelled due to weather, so several of these were rescheduled for later dates.
On Saturday, Brenton Skate Plaza is hosting the Principal Charity Classic. There will be on-ice activities beginning at 5pm till 7pm.
This weekend is also Teacher Appreciation Weekend. All instructors can skate and rent equipment free of charge. They're also encouraging the public to bring class contributions. These products will be donated to the
Des Moines Public Schools.
Plus, Monday February 12th will be Brenton Skating Plaza's late MLK Jr. Skate and contribute Day. Attendees can take pleasure in free admission and skate rental with a donation in between the hours of 12pm and 9pm.
