NELSON COUNTY, KY – Emergency responders made a grim discovery early Tuesday morning after locating a fully submerged vehicle with one deceased individual inside, according to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities were alerted around 6:30 AM after reports of an overturned vehicle in a retention pond near the intersection of US-150 and KY-48. Rescue teams arrived quickly but found the car completely underwater, making extraction difficult.
Dive teams worked for over an hour to recover the vehicle from the water. Unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending family notification.
"This is a heartbreaking situation. Our responders did everything they could, but the conditions were extremely challenging," said a Nelson County Fire & Rescue spokesperson.
Local residents expressed shock over the incident, citing concerns about road safety in the area. Some neighbors noted that poor lighting and sharp turns near retention ponds have been an ongoing issue.
