In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the community in shock, a mother was killed and her young daughter critically injured after a suspected drunk driver collided with their vehicle. The Orange Police Department reported the devastating event that unfolded on Sunday night at the intersection of Tustin Street and Collins Avenue.
Just after 8:00 p.m., patrol officers and first responders from the Orange City Fire Department rushed to the scene, where a multi-casualty accident had occurred. Here’s what transpired:
The collision claimed the life of a woman from Orange, who was seated in the front passenger seat. Her daughter, sitting directly behind her, was rushed to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition. Additionally, another juvenile passenger and the driver of the Toyota sustained serious but stable injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
The driver responsible for this tragic accident, identified as 18-year-old Roberto Noe Monfil Xitlama from Orange, was found to be driving without a license. He was evaluated at a hospital for minor injuries and later underwent a preliminary breath test, revealing a blood alcohol level more than double the legal limit.
Monfil Xitlama has since been arrested and charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He is currently booked at the Orange County Jail as the Traffic Unit continues its investigation. The intersection where the accident occurred will remain closed for approximately six hours as authorities gather evidence.
As the community grapples with this tragic event, there are lingering questions about accountability and safety. Who served alcohol to the underage driver? What measures can be taken to prevent such incidents in the future? The impact of this tragedy will be felt for years to come.
