On the evening of Thursday, September 19, a group of brave firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) faced a devastating turn of events while returning from the Airport Fire. Their journey home took a tragic twist when their vehicle was involved in a rollover accident on the 241 Freeway in Irvine, leaving multiple crew members injured.
The accident occurred around 6:50 p.m., marking the end of a grueling 12-hour shift for the handcrew. As they navigated the freeway, their truck swerved to avoid a ladder that had unexpectedly appeared in their path. In a split second, the vehicle struck the guardrail and flipped onto its side, resulting in a chaotic scene.
The consequences of the crash were severe:
Chief Brian Fennessy of the Orange County Fire Authority addressed the media, stating, “Many of the injured are going to be hospitalized for a while.” He noted that of the eight firefighters hurt, six were taken to local trauma centers, with their conditions varying from stable to critical.
