Trainees protest after shooting outdoors Wyandotte High football video game


KANSAS CITY, Kan.-- Students at one Kansas City, Kansas, high school went out of class Monday morning.

This comes after a shooting outside their school's Friday night football game, which involved 2 guys with weapons contending a school district police officer. Witnesses said that the officer shot back.

KCK Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Anna Stubblefield met with students from Wyandotte High School on Monday early morning.

Trainees stormed out of class that same day, protesting the current of several violent occurrences at or near the school. Trainees complained to BNN it concerned them a shooting occurred at such a vulnerable location-- like a football video game.

That event happened Friday around 9:30 p.m. simply as Wyandotte's football video game against F. L. Schlagle High School was ending. Trainees told BNN that officer was the only one working they might see.

" I heard gunshots, and I got scared. I heard random gunshots, and I was shrieking my avoid," Tom Sogoreo, a Wyandotte High freshman, said Monday.

" I was surprised. I didn't believe this would happen in the present," Aimee Melendez, another Wyandotte student, stated. "I only saw one police at the minute, and I heard the cops were shooting back."

A minimum of 10 patrol cars were outside the high school as students left on Monday afternoon.

Parents existed too, consisting of Melanie Cervantes, who believes these trainees have a right to be disturbed.

" It makes me unfortunate to understand that kids can't go to school, and they should feel safe. I'm not pleased about it. Kids must feel safe and enjoy life," Cervantes stated. "I believe if there's anything that can be done, it should be done."

A KCK Public Schools spokesperson explained this occurrence happened outside that Friday night football video game, and the guys with guns didn't get inside the arena. District leaders have asked for the public's assistance fighting violence near schools in the past.
