In a bold move towards enhancing early childhood education, Donna ISD has officially kicked off a significant construction project with groundbreaking ceremonies at three elementary schools. This initiative is part of a larger vision funded by a $120 million bond approved by voters in May 2023. The project aims to accommodate the district's anticipated growth while reinforcing its commitment to high-quality education for its youngest learners.
The expansions will add new classroom wings to Salazar, Garza, and Singleterry elementary schools, focusing on early childhood education. The successful M. Rivas Primary Discovery Academy, which recently received the H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award, serves as an inspirational model for these new facilities.
Donna ISD Superintendent Angela Dominguez highlighted the importance of early childhood development, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. “Research shows that early childhood education significantly benefits students in poverty,” she stated. “Our families deserve the very best, and these new facilities will provide just that.”
The new classrooms are designed to foster innovative learning experiences, emphasizing both traditional and hands-on educational approaches. Salazar Elementary Principal Janie Alaniz expressed her excitement for the new wing, stating, “These classrooms will be the new, innovative way to work with our early childhood students, preparing them for a bright future.”
With the current enrollment of approximately 120 Pre-K and kindergarten students, the new wing is expected to welcome an additional 100 students. This growth aligns with the community's vision for an enriching educational environment that prioritizes early learning.
As the groundbreaking ceremony concluded, enthusiasm filled the air, with educators and community leaders united in their commitment to investing in the future of Donna’s children.
