Breaking Ground: A New Era for Donna North High Welding Students!

Exciting news for aspiring welders at Donna North High! The school recently celebrated the grand opening of its brand-new, state-of-the-art welding facility, eliminating the need for students to travel to Donna High for classes. This innovative space is set to transform the educational experience for many students eager to enter the welding trade.

The Grand Unveiling

The new welding facility was unveiled during a grand opening ceremony attended by Donna ISD Superintendent Angela Dominguez, school board members, faculty, and enthusiastic students. This remarkable facility spans approximately 2,300 square feet and features 15 welding booths, allowing up to 30 students to work simultaneously.

Enhanced Learning Experience

Jacob Balderas, the welding instructor at Donna North High, expressed his excitement about the facility. He noted that previously busing students to Donna High cut into valuable class time, but now students can work on their certifications without any interruptions. “We have everything we need,” Balderas stated. “Our kids can stay here comfortably and focus on their education.”

Opportunities for Growth

Students enrolled in the welding program can earn up to 29 college credits through South Texas College and gain industry-recognized certifications. This comprehensive approach prepares graduates for immediate employment or further education in the welding field.

• Currently, the course accepts 25 upperclassmen, with a staggering waitlist of about 100 underclassmen eager to join in the coming years.
• Balderas believes this facility will serve as a "beacon of hope" for students aiming to improve their lives and their families' futures.

Student Perspectives

Aissa Sanchez, a senior in the welding program, shared her motivations for joining. “I wanted to try something that not many of my female classmates dive into,” she explained. She finds the new facility much more comfortable than traveling to the previous location and looks forward to a future in welding.

Kevin Lopez, another senior, echoed the excitement, stating, “I’m really proud that they made this facility possible for us. This is great for kids like us to pursue our dreams.” Lopez plans to seek work in welding after graduation and continue his education at South Texas College.
