In an exciting collaboration, Texas State Technical College (TSTC) has teamed up with the South Texas Independent School District’s Science Academy in Mercedes to introduce a cutting-edge dual credit program in Welding Technology. This initiative, which commenced this semester, is set to empower local students with vital skills and certifications that will pave the way for their future careers.
Welding is more than just a trade; it's a gateway to numerous opportunities in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Here’s why this program is significant:
Fourteen enthusiastic students from the Science Academy are currently enrolled in this innovative program, working closely with Marco Gonzalez, a dedicated welding instructor. Here’s a glimpse into their curriculum:
Robbie Mesa, TSTC’s manager of dual credit in Harlingen, highlights the importance of this partnership: “Many of their dual credit students will matriculate to TSTC after they graduate from high school.” This seamless transition is designed to ensure that students are well-prepared for their future educational endeavors.
According to data from onetonline.org, welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers in Texas enjoy a median annual salary exceeding $48,500, with job growth expected to rise by 23% between 2020 and 2030. TSTC offers a comprehensive Welding Technology program at all 11 campuses across the state, providing students with the chance to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and various certificates.
