M. Night Shyamalan has long been synonymous with cinematic surprises, but his recent offerings have left audiences questioning whether the master of the twist has lost his touch. With his new film "Trap," Shyamalan seems to be stepping away from the shock endings that defined his earlier works. Instead, viewers are left with a film that some might describe as tepid. Let’s dive into what makes "Trap" a polarizing addition to his filmography.
The film kicks off at a sold-out concert for pop sensation Lady Raven (played by Saleka, Shyamalan's daughter), where a team of SWAT and FBI agents is on high alert. Their mission? To apprehend a notorious serial killer rumored to be attending the show. As suburban dad Cooper (Josh Hartnett) and his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) enjoy the concert, the tension begins to build.
Unlike his previous films, "Trap" opts for a more straightforward narrative. Once the killer's identity is revealed—spoiler alert, it’s Cooper—viewers are thrust into a series of familiar thriller tropes. The final act outside the stadium feels like a rehash of everything audiences have come to expect from the genre. While the first act sets up an intriguing premise, the execution leaves much to be desired.
Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka, contributes her music to the film’s soundtrack, which adds a personal touch. Unfortunately, her performance as an actress is less than stellar. Hayley Mills, a talent with a rich history in film, feels underutilized, which is disappointing given her legacy in cinema.
Interestingly, some viewers are interpreting the film as a dark comedy, potentially due to Hartnett’s overly dramatic portrayal. The inconsistent tone creates confusion, oscillating between serious drama and unintended humor. While moments of levity emerge, they often clash with the film’s intended atmosphere.
With "Trap," audiences are left questioning whether Shyamalan is evolving as a filmmaker or simply running out of steam. The film’s mixture of genres and styles, combined with its predictable plot, raises concerns about the direction of his career. Will he return to his roots of shocking narratives, or are we witnessing a new chapter in his filmmaking journey?
