EL PASO, Texas (BNN) — As the political landscape heats up in El Paso, City Representative and mayoral candidate Isabel Salcido finds herself in the spotlight, not just for her political ambitions but also for the financial challenges that have recently come to light. With questions swirling around her personal and business finances, debts, and lawsuits, Salcido is stepping forward to address these serious issues head-on.
In a candid discussion with ABC-7, Salcido attributed much of her financial strain to the economic downturn of 2020. This crisis forced her to close several of her businesses, leaving her in a precarious situation. While court documents reveal over $200,000 in debts and judgments against her, Salcido insists that the original debt was significantly higher.
“Between all of them, about $350,000 in debt,” Salcido explained, shedding light on the scale of her financial troubles.
Salcido is currently facing five active or settled lawsuits. Despite this, she maintains a commitment to repay her creditors. "But at the end of the day, they’re going to get every single penny that I owe them. That’s all I was intending to do. That is why I did not declare bankruptcy,” she emphasized.
She asserts that she has reached payment agreements with most creditors and has already repaid at least $100,000. However, Salcido disputes one particular lawsuit filed in Harris County by Hitesh Amin, claiming she was in active communication about a payment plan prior to the lawsuit's filing in 2021.
One of the critical points in Salcido’s defense is her assertion that she was never served with notice of the lawsuit. She only discovered a default judgment against her while checking on a lien placed on her property earlier this year. “And if you don’t get served properly, how can you show up to a court you have no knowledge of?” she questioned.
Court records corroborate her claim that she was not properly notified, with a registered letter purportedly sent to her that she insists she never received.
As Salcido navigates these legal waters, she is also committed to her mayoral campaign, even loaning $100,000 of her personal funds to support her aspirations. “I’m doing it for the right reasons. I believe I’m going to make a difference here. And that investment for my community is extreme, well worth it,” she stated with conviction.
Isabel Salcido's journey offers a compelling narrative of resilience amid adversity. As she faces her financial and legal challenges, her determination to serve her community remains unwavering. The coming months will be critical for her, both in terms of resolving her financial issues and making her mark in the political arena.
