STOCKTON, CA—A devastating fire that tore through a Stockton neighborhood has exposed alarming deficiencies in the city's fire hydrant system, leaving officials scrambling for solutions and residents demanding accountability.
Fire crews arriving at last week's 4-alarm inferno faced an unimaginable nightmare: multiple hydrants either malfunctioned or delivered dangerously low water pressure. Witnesses reported firefighters frantically linking hoses across several blocks in a desperate attempt to contain flames consuming multiple structures.
Public records reveal the hydrant system hasn't undergone comprehensive upgrades since the 1990s, with maintenance budgets repeatedly slashed. A 2022 internal memo obtained by BNN warned of "catastrophic failure risks" if repairs weren't prioritized.
"They're gambling with our lives," said Maria Gonzalez, whose home narrowly escaped the flames. Meanwhile, City Manager Harry Black announced emergency funding would be redirected to address the most critical failures within 45 days.
