EL PASO, Texas - In a match that had fans on the edge of their seats, the UTEP Miners secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Texas A&M – Commerce in their home opener on Thursday evening. This win not only marks a significant achievement for the Miners but also sets the tone for an exciting season ahead.
The decisive moment of the match came in the 22nd minute, when Ana Quintero capitalized on a well-placed assist from Taya Lopez. Quintero's skillful strike found the back of the net, making it her first goal in the team's vibrant Orange and Blue. This pivotal moment was crucial in securing the Miners' lead against a determined opponent.
While the Miners' offense showcased their talent, it was the defensive prowess that truly shone through. Goalkeeper Angelina Amparano delivered an outstanding performance with a total of six saves, ensuring that the Lions (1-1-0) were kept at bay throughout the match.
This victory marks UTEP's first win in a home opener since the 2020 season, where they triumphed over NM State with a score of 3-1. Additionally, the Miners have now achieved back-to-back shutouts to kick off the season, a feat not accomplished since 2016.
Post-match, Head Coach Gibbs Keeton expressed pride in his team's performance, emphasizing the importance of playing at home. “Tonight was important for us because Texas A&M – Commerce was picked to finish second in the Southland, a highly competitive conference,” Keeton noted. “For us to win tonight is massive to get us in the right direction and push us forward.”
UTEP will return to University Field this Sunday, August 25th, to face off against UC Riverside at noon. Fans are invited to join a free pre-game tailgate starting at 11 a.m. MT, making it a perfect day to support the Miners.
