Virginia health authorities have confirmed the state’s first measles case of the year—a concerning development as vaccination rates continue to decline. The infected child, whose identity remains confidential, is currently under medical supervision while officials scramble to trace potential exposures.
Measles, once nearly eradicated in the U.S., has made a troubling comeback in recent years. This highly contagious virus spreads through coughing, sneezing, or even lingering in an infected person’s space up to two hours after they leave.
The Virginia Department of Health urges anyone with symptoms to isolate immediately and contact their healthcare provider—before visiting medical facilities to prevent further spread. They emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective protection, with two doses of the MMR vaccine providing 97% immunity.
