The Port of Alaska left the destructive 1964 earthquake reasonably unscathed, which left it poised to take up much of the state's cargo traffic as other communities rebuilt.
Sixty years later, almost 90 percent of all items getting in the state relocation through the port. Now it's undergoing a massive modernization project to keep it safeguarded from natural catastrophes, erosion, and heavy use. To totally grasp the scope of this task, Lori Townsend toured the port with director Steve Ribuffo.
