A devastating fire tore through an Akron apartment complex late Tuesday night, forcing nine families to flee their homes and sending one person to the hospital with injuries. Firefighters battled the intense blaze for hours as neighbors watched in shock, with many losing everything they owned in the flames.
Witnesses reported seeing thick black smoke billowing from the building as firefighters arrived on the scene. The fire spread quickly, engulfing multiple units within minutes. Fire crews worked tirelessly to contain the blaze while ensuring all residents had escaped safely.
"The flames were just swallowing up the building," said one shaken neighbor. "People were running out in their pajamas—some didn’t even have shoes on."
While the official cause remains under investigation, early reports suggest an electrical malfunction may be to blame. Fire officials confirmed they are examining wiring in the building, which some residents claim had been problematic for months.
"We’ve complained about flickering lights and outlets getting hot, but nothing was ever fixed," said Maria Torres, a displaced tenant.
Local organizations, including the Akron Red Cross, are providing emergency shelter, food, and clothing to those affected. A donation drive has already begun, with drop-off locations set up across the city.
With the building now deemed uninhabitable, many residents face an uncertain future. Some had no renters' insurance, leaving them with no immediate way to recover their losses. City officials are working to connect families with temporary housing solutions.
