The Jonesboro Police Department in Arkansas has taken swift action after a disturbing incident involving one of their officers. The department terminated Officer Joseph Harris immediately after a video surfaced showing him physically assaulting a detainee in the back of a patrol vehicle.
The department was made aware of the incident after receiving a complaint and conducted an internal review, which led to the decision to fire Officer Harris. This action was taken to address the serious nature of the complaint promptly.
Video footage of the incident was posted on the department's YouTube channel, showing the detainee with a seatbelt around his neck, seemingly attempting to harm himself in the moving vehicle. Officer Harris can be seen punching and elbowing the man before removing the seatbelt.
This is not the first time Officer Harris has faced discipline within the department. Two years ago, he was suspended for using excessive force, and he is currently a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit related to an inmate's death earlier this year.
The termination of Officer Harris comes at a time when law enforcement agencies are under increased scrutiny for officer misconduct. Recent incidents, such as the shooting of Sonya Massey in Illinois, have highlighted the need for accountability and transparency in policing.
