Breaking Now News (BNN) – Detroit’s newly appointed Secretary of Veterans Affairs is facing intense scrutiny following controversial remarks defending recent cuts to service dog benefits for veterans. The comments came during a visit to a local VA facility, where veterans and advocates voiced their frustrations.
The secretary, appointed just last month, argued that budget constraints necessitated reductions in funding for service dog programs, stating that other "more critical" healthcare services took priority. However, veterans' groups claim the move undermines mental and physical support for those who rely on trained canines for mobility, PTSD, and other disabilities.
During the visit, several veterans confronted the secretary, sharing emotional stories of how their service dogs saved their lives. One veteran stated, "My dog stops my night terrors. Without him, I’d be back in the ER every week."
In response, the secretary emphasized "difficult choices" but offered no immediate solutions. Advocates are now pushing for congressional intervention to restore funding.
