In a dramatic political twist, France’s Constitutional Council has officially barred Marine Le Pen’s protegé, Jordan Bardella, from holding public office for one year. The ruling stems from a controversial 2022 campaign finance scandal, dealing a major blow to the far-right National Rally (RN) party.
The decision centers on Bardella’s misuse of European Parliament funds during his 2022 campaign for France’s legislative elections. The court found that his team improperly diverted nearly €140,000 in EU funds to finance national campaign efforts—a direct violation of French electoral law.
Bardella, widely seen as Le Pen’s heir apparent, has been a key figure in RN’s rebranding efforts. His suspension creates uncertainty for the party’s future strategy:
Despite the setback, Bardella remains defiant, calling the ruling a "political weaponization of justice." He retains his position as party president but cannot run for office until 2025. Meanwhile, RN plans to appeal, arguing the punishment is disproportionate.
"This decision won’t stop us," Bardella declared. "The French people see through these tactics."
