In a bold move, the county Board of Supervisors has set an ambitious deadline of December 2025 to devise a comprehensive regional strategy aimed at tackling homelessness in conjunction with significant upcoming sporting events. These events include the much-anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl, and the 2028 Olympics.
Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn expressed the urgent need for action, stating, “The surge in international tourism and the need to establish adequate security perimeters will also put pressure on the region to address homeless encampments near the venues and neighborhoods hosting these events.” This proactive approach aims to ensure a welcoming atmosphere for visitors while addressing the pressing issue of homelessness.
The motion passed by the board emphasizes the importance of developing a written strategy to bolster and sustain efforts aimed at addressing unsheltered homelessness, particularly in areas where these high-profile events will occur.
Long Beach is poised to host at least eight Olympic events, including venues located downtown and along the scenic waterfront. This presents a unique opportunity for the city to lead by example in addressing homelessness.
The county has already implemented several programs to tackle encampments effectively. Notable initiatives include:
“As we approach these monumental sporting events, it is imperative that Los Angeles County and our local jurisdictional partners have a plan to effectively and humanely address encampments,” the motion states. The focus remains on prioritizing housing and services for the region's most vulnerable residents.
The forthcoming report is expected to include budget estimates and strategic recommendations for local stakeholders to support the implementation of this vital strategy. Collaboration among various entities, including the city of Los Angeles, LA 2028, and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, will play a critical role in this endeavor.
