The Little Rock Animal Village has officially lifted its temporary suspension on adoptions for breeds often labeled as "potentially dangerous," including pit bulls, Rottweilers, and other large dogs. The decision comes after a weeks-long review of safety protocols and public outcry from animal advocates.
Last month, the shelter paused adoptions for certain breeds following incidents involving aggressive behavior. Officials stated the move was precautionary, allowing time to reassess procedures.
While many applaud the shelter’s decision, critics argue the policy unfairly targets specific breeds. Advocates emphasize that aggression is often a result of environment, not genetics.
"Breed-specific policies don’t solve the real issue—irresponsible ownership," said local activist Jenna Carter. "Every dog deserves a fair chance."
The Animal Village plans to expand its outreach programs, including mandatory training sessions for adopters of larger breeds. Officials hope this will reduce returns and improve long-term placements.
