Former Las Vegas City Councilwoman Michele Fiore is facing criminal charges for allegedly using contributions meant to honor fallen police officers for her own personal gain. Among the donors allegedly defrauded is Sheriff Joe Lombardo.
Federal prosecutors indicted Fiore last month for allegedly defrauding an anonymous public official and Sheriff Lombardo by rerouting donations intended for a fallen police officer statue to pay her political fundraising bills, rent, and even her daughter's wedding expenses.
Fiore pleaded not guilty and has been suspended from her current position as a Nye County justice of the peace. Her criminal trial is set to begin next month.
Robert Langford, a Las Vegas defense attorney, stated that Sheriff Lombardo could be compelled to testify in the trial, or an official from Lombardo's campaign account could serve as a witness.
Fiore has a history of controversy, including being removed as the Republican majority leader in the Assembly for insubordination and facing allegations of violating campaign finance laws during her bid for state treasurer.
