A serious multi-vehicle collision has caused significant delays on Interstate 40 East in South Durham, prompting emergency responders to temporarily close the highway. According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash involved multiple injuries, with several individuals transported to nearby hospitals.
The crash occurred during peak morning traffic, leading to a complete stoppage of eastbound lanes near the South Durham exit. Troopers reported that at least five vehicles were involved, including a commercial truck. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene with debris scattered across multiple lanes.
First responders, including Durham Fire Department, EMS, and state troopers, arrived quickly to secure the scene. Air ambulances were on standby, though ground transportation was ultimately used for all patients. Traffic was diverted onto nearby US-15/501, causing significant backups for morning commuters.
Highway Patrol officials are working to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that sudden braking in congestion may have triggered a chain-reaction collision. Toxicology tests are pending, but troopers have not yet confirmed if impairment was a factor.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Real-time traffic updates can be found on the NCDOT website or through local traffic alert services. Officials estimate that lanes may reopen within the next few hours.
