It was a day of dreams fulfilled, nervous laughter, and happy tears—Match Day 2025 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. Hundreds of fourth-year medical students ripped open envelopes, revealing where they’ll spend the next chapter of their medical careers. The room erupted in cheers, hugs, and more than a few stunned gasps as futures were decided in an instant.
For those unfamiliar with the medical world, Match Day is the culmination of years of grueling work. After months of interviews and agonizing waiting, medical students across the U.S. simultaneously discover where they’ll complete their residencies. The process is nerve-wracking—students rank their preferred hospitals, and hospitals rank their preferred candidates. A computer algorithm then makes the final, binding match.
At UPenn, the excitement was palpable. Students gathered with family, friends, and mentors, clutching their envelopes with shaky hands. Some paced, others closed their eyes in silent prayer. When the clock struck noon, the room exploded into a mix of jubilation, relief, and raw emotion.

“I’ll never forget the elderly man who held my hand in the ER and said, ‘You’re going to be a great doctor.’ That got me through second year,” shared David Kim, now headed to UCLA for emergency medicine.
This year’s UPenn cohort matched at elite programs nationwide, with specialties spanning from pediatrics to plastic surgery. A few notable trends:
Residencies begin in July, but for now, these future doctors are savoring the moment. Many plan to travel, spend time with family, or—finally—catch up on sleep. But one thing’s certain: Philadelphia’s loss is the medical world’s gain.
