Katie Ledecky and Nick Meads will be at the forefront of the United States team as flag bearers during the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Ledecky, who won four swimming medals in Paris, and Mead, a swimmer who helped the US end a 64-year drought without an Olympic medal in men's swimming, were selected by their Olympic teammates to represent the United States.
"I feel incredibly honored to represent the American team as a flag bearer at the end of our time together in Paris," said Ledecky. "I am very proud of the team's accomplishments in Paris and excited to celebrate with my teammates on Sunday."
The American team shared a video of swimming teammate Bobby Finke calling Ledecky to inform her that she had been selected as a flag bearer.
"I'm out at sea and you're making me cry," said the visibly emotional Ledecky to Finke upon hearing the news.
"It gave me chills," said Mead after his teammates told him he would be the first in his position to lead the United States team as one of their flag bearers. Nick Mead made history as a member of the first U.S. men's four rowing team to win Olympic gold since 1960.
Now, he'll make even more history as the first rower to lead Team USA as one of our flag bearers at the Closing Ceremony.
During the opening ceremony, tennis star Coco Gauff and legendary basketball player LeBron James were selected by their teammates to be the flag bearers for the US Olympic team.
The Closing Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern time and is expected to last until 5:15 p.m. Eastern time. The Stade of France, where the athletics competitions have taken place in the Paris Olympics, will be the venue for the closing ceremony. This time, the event will be more traditional compared to the opening ceremony, which was held at the Rio Siena.
It will include traditional lights, a parade of athletes, and the passing of the Olympic flag to the organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games. There will be a medal presentation ceremony for the participants of the women's marathon earlier in the day.
