BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - - The hockey world will have its eyes on more than just the NHL playoffs on Monday night.
The NHL Draft Lottery, set up for 8 p.m. on ESPN, will identify what franchise will get the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft on June 28. Unlike in recent years, the fortunate team that wins the No. 1 pick will have a fairly simple decision to make: the top prospect in 2023 is Canadian forward Connor Bedard, who has actually been hailed as the best NHL possibility given that Connor McDavid in 2015.
Eleven groups have differing opportunities to win the No. 1 total choice, but the Sabres are not amongst them due to their higher standings positioning and a recent guideline change that permits groups to leap up an optimum of just 10 areas through the lottery game.
What are the Sabres' lotto chances?
The Sabres completed 20th in the NHL standings after their playoff push came up simply short, which gives them a small opportunity to catapult themselves into the top 3 if the lottery game balls are in their favour, and a similarly little possibility to drop a spot.
In reality, however, they will most likely have the No. 13 pick in June's draft. – No. 14 choice: 5.1% chance
The Sabres have had the No. 1 NHL Draft choice 4 times in history, most recently in 2021 when they picked defenseman Owen Power.
What groups have an opportunity at the No. 1 choice?
While the Sabres will not have the opportunity to snag a possibly generational talent in Bedard, a variety of groups do, consisting of 2 divisional rivals in the Montreal Canadiens and
Detroit Red Wings.
The lotto is conducted through a set of 14 ping pong balls with varying numbers being positioned into a lottery machine. When a random set of 4 balls are chosen, this enables for 1,001 different mixes. The even worse a group finished in the NHL standings, the more four-number mixes they are appointed, thus teams' greater or lower portions for the leading pick.
Two illustrations will take place based on each team's designated combinations. The illustration that will identify the leading pick occurs initially. Technically, all 16 groups associated with the lotto can win the No. 1 pick, but due to the new rule of teams being able to jump an optimum of 10 areas from their last standing location, if one of the bottom fives groups were to win it, the Ducks would receive the leading pick given that they finished last in the standings. This is why
Anaheim's percentage is considerably higher than other groups.
If, for instance, the Sabres won the No. 1 pick lotto, they would jump to No. 3, the optimum possible under the guidelines.
After that, another lottery illustration will happen to determine what team gets the No. 2 choice using similar rules.
