Top-seeded Coco Gauff was unexpectedly defeated at the National Bank Open by 14th-seeded Diana Shnaider in windy conditions at Sobeys Stadium. Gauff, the No. 2-ranked player in the world, struggled to find her rhythm and made several unforced errors throughout the match.
Preparing for her U.S. Open title defense, Gauff expressed disappointment in her performance, stating, "I just wasn't finding my timing well. I had a lot of unforced errors and a lot of double faults. She played steady and she didn't give me any free points."
Shnaider, playing her first hard-court event since April, capitalized on Gauff's mistakes and secured the victory with another break to advance to the quarterfinals.
In other matches, defending champion Jessica Pegula triumphed over qualifier Ashlyn Krueger, while Aryna Sabalenka defeated Katie Boulter. The competition continues to heat up as the tournament progresses.
