Rural Nevada Sheriff Investigates Potential Hate Crime

A rural Nevada sheriff is currently investigating a potential hate crime after a Black man collecting signatures for a ballot measure recorded a confrontation with another man who directed a racial slur at him and mentioned that "they have a hanging tree" for people like him.

"I'm still shaking every time I think about it," Ricky Johnson expressed to The Associated Press by phone as he boarded a plane in northern Nevada back to his home in Houston, Texas.

Johnson posted part of the video of the August 2 incident in Virginia City, Nevada, on social media, drawing swift condemnation from local and state officials. Sponsors of the 10-day Hot August Nights classic car event happening at the time revoked the registrations of those identified in the video confronting Johnson.

Storey County Undersheriff Eric Kern mentioned that the office has wrapped up interviews with Johnson and potential suspects, delivering the case to the district attorney for further decisions on any charges. Kern also added, "As far as a hate crime, it could be an element. There is an enhancement we are looking at."

Johnson, who is not visible in the video posted to TikTok, reported that a white man called him a racial epithet and referenced the "hanging tree" before he began recording the encounter. In the recording, Johnson asks the man to repeat what he said.

A loud, profanity-filled argument on both sides ensued before a woman informed Johnson that he was on her property. He repeatedly asked her not to touch him as they moved the conversation into the street, as seen in the video.

Kern noted that Johnson provided the video to investigators, highlighting that no individual, whether suspect or victim, has been uncooperative in the investigation. The Sheriff's office released a statement over the weekend, stating that they do not condone racism, inequality, or hate speech and are committed to conducting a thorough investigation.

What do you think?

  • Was the potential hate crime in Virginia City an isolated incident?
  • Do you think enough action has been taken by local and state officials?
  • How can communities better address and prevent hate crimes?
