In a groundbreaking moment for the University of Akron, R.J. Nemer has become the first graduate of the institution in over a century to take the helm as university president. During his recent State of the University address, Nemer passionately outlined his emotional connection to the university and shared his ambitious vision for its future, over 200 days into his presidency.
Addressing a crowd of about 200 attendees at the Akron Press Club, Nemer expressed, “I am better equipped and now have a deeper meaning and understanding of this wonderful institution and place. In multiple ways, the culmination of my career is this homecoming.” His heartfelt words resonated with many, illustrating the deep ties he has forged with the university.
While the university has experienced a slight uptick in enrollment for the 2023-24 academic year, Nemer indicated that it is too early to predict trends for the upcoming 2024-25 year. “Our campus is built for more students than we currently have, and one of my primary goals is to grow the student body in strategic ways,” he stated.
Nemer's commitment to improving student experiences is evident in his plans to expand opportunities beyond the College of Business. He noted, “Something I hear often from our students is that we offer big school opportunities with personalized education.” This dual approach aims to attract a diverse array of students, while still providing a unique educational environment.
Central to Nemer's vision is the establishment of a consistent and transformative identity for the University of Akron. He believes this effort will positively impact the university's public image and foster a sense of community among students, faculty, and alumni. Nemer also reaffirmed his commitment to revitalizing the Polsky Building into a vibrant retail and community hub, collaborating with local stakeholders to uplift downtown Akron.
As the address drew to a close, Nemer was playfully asked about his predictions for the annual Wagon Wheel football game against Kent State University. His enthusiastic response, “Yeah, Akron!” elicited laughter and applause from the audience, showcasing his school spirit.
